VACCINATION SCHEDULE IN DOGS

Written by

Hello Readers,

Vaccination is the most important procedure to prevent some fatal and very painful diseases in dogs.  Vaccines are basically proteins or inactivated microorganisms (bacteria, virus etc.) which we inject into the animal body so that body gets sensitized to it and develop immunity against that particular organism. In India, many companies are marketing their vaccines with various most of them equally effective. But more important is we should have an understanding of what is current vaccination schedule and guidelines so that our lovely pets always remain safe.

Vaccination is usually classified into Core Vaccines and Non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are those which are essentially needed for your dogs to prevent fatal diseases whereas non-core vaccines are optional according to the region.

Core vaccines include vaccination against Canine Parvovirus, Canine Distemper virus, Canine Parainfluenza, Canine Adenovirus (hepatitis), Leptospira, Rabies, Coronavirus, Bordetella Bronchiseptica. Various combination of these core vaccines are marketed in India. And vaccination schedule is recommended by your vet according to the combinations and formulations you are using.

The main aim is to start vaccination from the 6-8 week of age and finish initial core vaccinations by 16 week age with repeating interval of 2-4 weeks in between. So the vaccination if started at 6 weeks age and repeated every 4 weeks there will be set of four vaccinations whereas if vaccination starts at 8 weeks then set of vaccinations will be three only.
